La Corte Romanengo 1780. An aesthetic breakfast in Milan.

Milanese location from a historic pasticceria with a charming interior and one of the best croissants in town.

Dear friends, living in Milan for years I’ve gotten used to a lot of things. The fact that in most bakeries pastries are sometimes served with bare hands, or there are crumbs on the table hasn’t bothered me for a long time. If you want to live without a nervous breakdown, you adjust. Well, I do adjust – I wipe the table myself with a wet wipe.

But sometimes I still expect from cafe beauty and peace of mind. Most often it happens when some friends come to visit me or we go to breakfast with my parents. For this occasion I have a wonderful place called La Corte Romanengo 1780.

The historic pastry shop is originally from Genova. In Milan it’s located in the quiet Sant Ambrogio neighborhood, which is worthy of a promenade. You will never find it if you don’t know about it. In the part of the building accessible to the eye, you will see the windows of the same name sweet store. And to get into the cafe, you need to ring the doorbell, the lock will click and you will discover the courtyard where the La Corte is hidden.

Romanengo is filled with a calming tranquility (although I think after my reel on Instagram for almost a million views the situation might have changed), a very aesthetically pleasing interior and attention to detail which is unique for Milan. From the cup holders to the sugar in the caramel shape, everything here will please the soul of visuals.

The cafe has its own laboratory, where they make some of the best real French croissants and pain au chocolat in the city. I can’t say that the full breakfast suggestion is big, but still the menu includes toast with jam, delicious bread with butter and anchovies, and avocado toast.

Overall it’s suitable for both a romantic breakfast and a meeting when you need to have a quiet conversation, and it’s better to call for a table in advance.

The bill is above average, of course, but anyway less than for example in Marchesi. There is also lunch at the place, but I was less impressed with the menu (I have my own protein requirements). And also I suspect there is full seating at lunchtime and that can affect the quality of service.

A little information note: Romanengo 1780 is the oldest artisanal pastry shop in Italy, founded in 1780. The Milanese institution has three rooms by design – a La Corte cafeteria, a pastry store and a tea and spice store. As a historical pasticceria, Romanengo honors and respects traditional recipes of working with chocolate and sugar and uses the highest quality ingredients, fruits, flowers and spices. Here you can taste and buy classic Italian sweets such as chocolate, fudge, floral syrups, candied chestnuts and fruits.
